Celebrating Rosh Hashana

by Stephanie on September 30, 2008

I almost forgot to share …. we will be celebrating Rosh Hashana (also called the Feast of Trumpets) this week. Rosh Hashana enters in the High Holy days, leading up the the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) and then into the Feast of Tabernacles (Sukkot).

Why do we as Christians celebrate the Jewish Feasts? A few years ago we were introduced to them through a Bible teaching and found them fascinating. Learning about the feasts taught us wonderful things about God, the Jewish people, and the prophetic fullfillment of Christ. They have such a rich meaning and spiritual heritage that we began to celebrate them also.

Each year we have been part of a church body that celebrates along with us. This year, we are not in the same fellowship, and we considered not celebrating the feasts at all. As this one was approaching, we were continually feeling impressed to celebrate them to the best of our ability as a family.  We are welcoming this time and this season into our lives to help us reflect on our relationship with the Lord and seeking a closer walk with Him. We have been feeling as though we are going through a valley lately, so this time of deep reflection is going to be very good for us!

We will have apple challah with our meal, as well as traditional apples and honey. I also made a yummy apple crisp to eat for dessert. We will be reading Psalm 81, and we have also decided to study Colossians chapter 3 this week.

If you have never read about the feasts, they are very informative and fun. You can learn so much by studying them, and for us it helped us understand the Bible in a new way. There are a variety of resources available to help you learn more. I would recommend Biblical Holidays  to get you started. If you do celebrate these feasts, or any of your Hebraic heritage, remember keep your eyes on Christ, and keep it fun and simple!

Shana Tova (good year!)

Stephanie, I am so glad to hear that you celebrated this year. I wish we could have been home. We were on a retreat so we listened to shofar blasts on the internet & read a summary of Yom Teruah (Rosh Hashanah) and prayed. The only real way to celebrate the day is by the word of God & what’s in your heart. So Kudos to you & the family!!
