Lessons Learned After 4 Days Without Power

by Stephanie on December 18, 2008

After a recent ice storm, we were left without electricity for 4 very long days. But there is always and lesson to be learned from all experiences, so here are mine:

1.  It brings out the best and worst in people (and yourself) to both extremes

2. Expect people to forget the basics we all learned in kindergarten. When you have to wait an hour or more in line for gas, kerosene, a heater, or hot cup of coffee there shall be no pushing, cutting, stay single file for goodness sakes, no cussing.

3. Even Walmart can close down in a crisis. What are you supposed to do when Walmart isn’t even open?

4. You can never have too many friends or relatives close by. They are great resources, and if they get your power back before you, you can bunk with them. Or at least take a hot shower.

5. A warm meal and hot coffee, even from McDonald’s is a luxury. Hey, why does Walmart close and McD’s stays open?

6. Sometimes the weathermen really don’t exaggerate. The next time they tell me there is an inch of ice coming, I am all ears.

7. Cooking on a camp stove by candle light loses its rustic appeal after the first night.

8. A warm house is more important than a clean house, but cleaning your house can keep you warm. Just expect your husband to ask you why in the world you are cleaning at a time like this.

9. If you live in New England, you should never wait one more day to shower or do laundry. You never know if you will have those necessities the next day.

and finally #10

No matter how prepared you are, you can never be prepared for 4 days without power.

Oh and why not one more. This lesson can apply all the time, but is essential during a time like this:

Attitude is everything!

So true!! I love number 8. The first day I cleaned my whole basement. I guess I’m not the only strange one:)

We have another storm rolling in this weekend too! We had some snow yesterday. I had to cancel shopping again, but today I am going while there is no snow or ice!

Great list! I especially like #9. According to the weatherman here in RI snow will fall Fri-Sun. Which means I (and the rest of RI) will be buying milk and bread tomorrow. = )
