Kids Picks Books: What We Have Been Reading
My children (ages 14, 10, 7) are avid readers, so we always have lots of books around the house. I know many that homeschool are always looking for quality books for their children to read, so I thought it would be fun to share some of the books they have enjoyed so far this month! The Happy Housewife is also hosting a weekly feature called “What’s In Your Book Basket?” where everyone can share what their children are reading, so be sure to visit for more great book ideas!
Here is a run down:
It seems that whenever we take a nature walk, my son is more intrigued by looking for animal tracks than anything else, so this book has been a great addition to our schooling.
Sketching Outdoors in Winter by Jim Arnosky
I discovered this series of books for each season at the library and we just love them! The drawings are simple black and white with explanations hand written beside them. They have inspired my children to try out drawing more of nature, which they have been challenged by this year. This is one of those books that are so good, I am trying to track down the entire series to add to our home library, and I am looking into more books by this great author.
Another gem! We have been reading these aloud and my children love them. They are similar to Character Sketches, but are more suited to younger children. In this series, Scriptural truth and lessons about the Creator are the focus as you learn about animals and how they care for their families, adapt to their environments, and how their design enables them to survive. A Scripture verse is given along with a few simple questions at the end of each reading. I love these books, and will also be adding these to my home library!
Since my 1st grader is reading fluently, I have been looking for living books that he can read by himself. I love these On My Own series of books and plan on continuing to have him read a few of these each month. He really was able to grasp the concepts in the books, and was inspired to journal about them too!
My 14 year old read this book and really enojoyed it. It is about a young girl named Miriam who is living in the Roman Empire during the first century after Christ. Filled with historical events that are mostly accurate, and faith building adventures, I am shelving this one for me to read next : )
As Long As There Are Mountains
by Natalie Kinsey-Warnock
My 10 year old read this book and loved it! It is about a 13 year old girl living in Vermont in the 1950’s. I don’t want to give away the story line, but it is a good one! The writing style of this author is great for read alouds too!
Those are just a few highlights of what we have been reading around here. What have your children been reading lately? Since I am always on the lookout for good books (and they are becoming harder and harder to find) I’d love some recommendations!

Thanks for a great review! That Kinsey-Warnock book sounds especially good; my girls have enjoyed some of her picture books. What age would you say it’s appropriate for as a read-aloud?
I host a read-aloud carnival on my blog every Thursday. You’re welcome to join in!

Amy,
I would say that ages 6 and up would enjoy it as a read aloud! Thanks for letting me know about your carnival. I will add it to my list
