Banana Ice Cream (Without An Ice Cream Machine)

by Stephanie on May 12, 2009

I was so excited the other day to drive by a local farm store and see bananas at .25/lb! They are already pretty ripe, so I will end up freezing most of them. I freeze bananas whole a lot, but I also like to chop them up and freeze them on a cookie sheet first. It makes it easier to plunk a handful into smoothies and banana ice cream.

Banana ice cream, did you say? But I don’t have an ice cream machine! Neither do I. (Well actually, I do. I just picked a brand new one up from the thrift shop, but I haven’t used it yet, so stay with me on this!). You don’t need an ice cream machine to make ice cream at home!

You can make homemade ice cream right in your food processor. Banana Ice Cream is one of my favorites. It is fast, easy, cheap, healthy, and delicious!

Here is how you can make your own in just a couple of easy steps:

Step 1:

Load a food processor with frozen chopped bananas, a good squirt of honey, and a tsp. of  vanilla, and sometimes I will put in a Tbsp. or so of Flax Seed Oil. Add a bit of water to get the mixture moving (not too much or it it won’t be fluffy like ice cream).

Step 2:

Pulse the food processor for a few seconds until you get an ice cream consistency. Voila! Homemade Ice Cream!

This is the basic mix; you can add numerous things to it. For chocolate ice cream you could add some carob powder . You can mix in some chocolate chips when it is done or you can keep it healthy by adding some frozen raspberries or blueberries to make a fruit ice cream.

This ice cream won’t store well though, so you need to eat it right away. (Not usually a problem in my house!)

I really love ice cream.
But sadly, I always buy it, I never make it myself.
I should try the recipe sometime.

It just seems so easy — much easier than our ice-cream maker! Now I just need a new food processor – ours just broke :o (

This looks great! I’ve been thinking about getting an ice cream machine, but I really don’t want to invest in one. This might just be the solution!

Annie Kate,
I wondered if they could be made in the blender, though I never tried it that way. Thanks for sharing that!

Lori May 12, 2009 at 5:16 pm

Well, how neat is that!!?? I’ll definitely have to give that a try! :) I really like the idea of that!

We do something similar when bananas are cheap, only we freeze the bananas whole, in their peels, and we make the ice cream in the blender without any sweetener. Making it in the food processer looks fluffier, though.

I never see bananas quite that cheap, but I think it will be worth keeping my eyes open if it tastes good and is low fat too.
Might not even work out too expensive with the value bags from the supermarket either, withotu waiting for them to be reduced.

YUMMY and perfect for my family !!! My 2ds has a lot of allergies and we are very blessed he can have bananas. So I will be making some of this this summer ! IF someone wants to not use sugar or honey they can use aquave nectar and it is GREAT for those who need low glycemic sweeteners. You would never know. [0=

Thank you for sharing this recipe!

Would you believe that I paid $2.50 for one of these sundaes this summer! It was yummy though. It had carob powder and maple syrup mixed as a topping.

No I just freeze them when they are ripe! I dont seem to have a problem with the color at all!

Lyn August 31, 2007 at 8:22 pm

Do you put anything on your bananas before freezing so they don’t discolor?

Mommy August 31, 2007 at 3:26 pm

We may have to try this soon. Thanks for the tip. :)
