Did you know that all fruit bowls are not created equal? Neither did I until recently. This is a kitchen tip I learned accidentally and feel it is worthy enough to dedicate and entire blog post to it
A nice bowl of fruit out on the counter reminds us to have a healthy snack and it looks so inviting! Not only do I want a fruit bowl that is functional, I want it to look nice as well.
Here is my first fruit bowl. While it was pretty, it was awkward and it just wasn’t big enough.

This was actually given to me several years ago, and I have never found a practical use for it, even though I do love it. It is like a condiment tray or cheese and cracker tray. It seems too pretty to store away in a cupboard. Any ideas for me?
Then I found this pretty bowl at a thrift shop for $1. I love the way the fruit looks in it. However, all of my apples went bad in a day or so.
After patiently waiting and searching, I found the one. Bonus: it was on sale. It is is big enough, pretty, and allows the fruit to breath. Here is fruit bowl #3:
Maybe I am not the ripest fruit in the bowl, but I didn’t know that a fruit bowl had to have air flow or the fruit will go bad. Also apples help bananas ripen. That can be good if you want to ripen your bananas but can also over ripen them, or ripen them too quickly. So if you have the wrong fruit bowl, you may have a pretty rotten deal
And your mom was right. One bad apple really can ruin the whole batch. One apple past its prime lets off ethylene gases, causing all the fruits to rot.
So now I know, and since you have read this, now you know too! Not all bowls are made for fruit. You learn something new everyday!

Good call about the air flow and apple/banana relationship. If the apples start to go, get them in the fridge fast!

I did not know this. I especially did not know that apples ripened bananas. Thank you for sharing this. The fruit in my kitchen thanks you as well.

Wow! Good to know! Thanks for sharing.
I like the colander idea, too. And I didn’t know that about apples ripening bananas.

I like to keep my apples in the fridge since there’s nothing like a cold crispy apple! For bananas and oranges and the like, I use a decorative colander (good and holey!) and it works a charm!

I like cold apples too my teeth have become terribly sensitive these past few years! A pretty colander would work out great too, never thought of that!
I didn’t know apples help bananas ripen. Thanks for sharing that little tip. It always seems like our bananas ripen really fast anyway. I’ll have to make sure and keep them away from the apples.
I love that first bowl. I agree. I wouldn’t want to put it away in a cupboard either. I don’t know if it would work for you, but could you use it in the bathroom for storing and displaying pretty soaps or other bath/beauty accessories on the counter or back of the toilet? That was just one thing that came to mind.
