How Does Your Garden Grow: Bugs, Be Gone!

I hope every one had a wonderful 4th of July holiday, and maybe you even enjoyed some yummy fresh garden veggies? We have been picking lots of lettuce, basil and parsley and have started to see some squash growing and lots of flowers blooming.

We have had incessant rain that has been driving me crazy that has been keeping our garden well watered. I was able to finally have some nice weather to get out there and weed and stake up the tomatoes and beans. I just love being out in my garden!

It looks like some powdery mildew is on the prowl with a few cucumber beetles joining in the fun. Grr!

I like to keep my garden as organic and natural as possible, but the fact is there are lots of pests and diseases that would love to destroy it, so the use of something to control pests and disease is necessary . Companion planting works well, but sometimes intervention is still necessary! I have found a lot of homemade remedies I can use in the garden that are not insecticides. For powdery mildew, you can use a baking soda spray. For cucumbers, a mixture of soap and water usually works. If all else fails, there are organic sprays that you can buy but I have never used them (and hope I don’t have to!) so I wouldn’t know what to recommend. Here is a great list of a variety of natural home garden remedies from everything to powdery mildew to slugs.  I pick up some spray bottles at the dollar store and make up several of these to keep handy. Make sure you label them!

So now it is your turn to share: How does your garden grow? How do you control pests and disease in your garden?

It has been a while since I’ve shared about my garden as I have been on vacation, without internet access, and just plain swamped. I am very pleased with how my garden is doing what with me being such a slacker.

I’m a shocker when it comes to gardening. I put it off for as long as I can and then the to do list is huge. I currently have to week and prune my rose garden and its turning into a bigger job by the day as the weeds go. We just pull the weeds out – I try and avoid weed sprays if I can. I usually even leave the aphids – they eventually go away!

We keep using our organic spray but we are definitely fighting that bug battle. I noticed this week that the grasshoppers have come in too. Grrrrr!

Hey Stephanie, as usual this was a very helpful post. I didn’t have time to get my garden post finished. :( Oh well. Maybe next week. :)
