The Bare Bones Budget: “How Low Can You Go?” July Update

It’s frugal friday, and I realized it has been a while since I updated you on our bare bones budgeting.  Just when I feel as though I have a handle on this  budget of ours, I find that we need to go a little lower!

Two weeks ago, my husband received a pay cut. It wasn’t huge, but at this point any amount below $5 is huge.

While there are several measures we are taking to shore up our budget, I just have to share the amazing ways God has already provided. It is so exciting to see how He has been so faithful to us!

::A man at my husbands work asked him if he would give him a ride to and from work and he would split the gas and toll costs. This is a huge help to us right now! And can I just say that God provided this “rider” the same week we got the pay cut! This covered about half of what our weekly reduction would be.

::Another gentlemen at my husbands work approached him about renting his home. As I shared before we have been trying to find a cheaper rental for almost a year to no avail. We finally said that the only way it would work is if God dropped something into our laps. Me, of little faith! This house is gorgeous, closer to his work and would be several hundred dollars cheaper a month. And we most likely wouldn’t have to deal with all the deposits to move in. We will find out September 1 if it is a go. (Keep it in prayer, if you could!)

::My grocery budget has been an amazing thing. I have been easily able to keep it well under budget this month, even skipping shopping this past week! Our food is being stretched, our dollars are being stretched, and I feel like I am just standing by watching it happen!

::Our home school funds are really low this year so I began praying about it. God has placed a dear woman in my life who offered to loan me enough curriculum to meet most (if not all) of our home schooling needs! The very little I do have to buy is being taken care of with some items I have sold on Ebay (for much higher than I anticipated).

::Our church is participating in a class that was quite expensive to take. We were going to have to opt out because of the cost, when another family had it laid upon their hearts to cover the class for us. This 6 month class is going to be such a blessing to our family, and I am amazed at how He has worked it out for us!

Those are just a few of the many things God has been doing with our finances. We are truly in a season of budgeting by faith. It is exciting to see us become less reliant on ourselves and more on Him, and then seeing Him provide so graciously all of our needs. As our funds get smaller, God’s hand gets bigger. I am awestruck by it all!

Awesome! Isn’t it amazing how God works?

My dad has said that God can either increase our income our decrease our out-go.

:) I’m glad you’re focusing on the blessings.

It is in those moments of most difficulty that God reminds us that He has given us ALL that we have. I have seen this is my life as well. Amazing blessing have occured. Things have still been tight, but God has taken care of our needs, and sometimes even blessed us with our wants.

What a mighty God we serve!

Thank you for sharing what God has been doing in your life during these difficult times. What you wrote reminded me that when others around us are having difficult times it is then that God asks others to step up and be a blessing. My husband and I are striving to be obedient in sharing the blessings we have received with those in need of a blessing.

Obedience is so very important and we are always blessed when we do so.

What an amazing post, that I needed to get my heart back on track. We have been struggling financially lately as well, and have been living on a bare bones budget just to make ends meet. It seemed each day presented us with a new expense and I would cry out to the Lord because we just couldn’t make ends meet. Finally things are starting to look up, and reading this post just reminds me of all the small things that the Lord has blessed us with during our hard time.

Thank you for the reminder of how good God really is. Good luck with your situation, things will continue looking up for you!

God Bless,

It’s great that God has been blessing you in so many ways! The blessing abound when you trust him… I know too how that works.

My husband has been saved from layoffs so far, although so many around us have been laid off or lost jobs. We’ve counted our blessings so far and know that if the job goes, then we can trust that there is something else that God has in mind for us. Such a comfort!

Like Beverly mentioned, tithing certainly keeps you faith minded.. and the blessings continue to come.

Keep up the faith, and thanks for sharing! :)

Wow! God is so awesome! We have a similar situation. I lost my part time job and we were already living on a tight income. So it was needed money that I lost, not extra. But somehow everything has worked out, thanks to God!
God bless,
