I had fun using the Allrecipes ingredient finder this week to come up with some new dishes using what I have in the pantry, freezer and refrigerator. I just have one problem that I need your help on. Tell ya about that in a minute…first this weeks menu:
Breakfast:
Homemade Yogurt, Muffins, fresh Juice x2
Waffles with syrup, Fresh Juice
Pancakes with Syrup, fresh juice
Cereal, Toast, Juice x 2
Moms Cinnamon Rolls, Scrambled Eggs, Fresh Juice
Dinners ( I usually serve salad and homemade bread with each meal):
Oven Roasted Chicken, glazed carrots, baked potato
Slow Cooker Chicken and Sausage Chili
Slow Cooker Chicken and Dumplings (using homemade biscuits)
Slow Cooker Chicken and Taco Soup
Pizza
Leftovers
So what is my problem? Well I love finding recipes that use up what I have, however after printing these out and looking a little closer, I noticed that two of the recipes call for a can of beer! I really don’t want to use beer in my cooking, so maybe someone out there has a good substitute or perhaps I can just leave it out? Your input is much appreciated!

The link is down for the Chicken and Dumplings over at All Recipes, but I have to wonder if you are making the same one I just made!! If you want to take a look head over and see the additions/changes I made. I originally made it exactly as the recipe called for but found that my boys like it better with quite a few changes!
Wish I had a clue for you on the beer – I never have beer in the house and I normally pass up recipes that have beer involved just because I don’t want to buy any (it’d just go to waste!!)
Have a good week!

I just used chicken broth for the beer and it seemed to work out fine
Thanks for the tips on the chicken and dumplings. I got your comment just as I was getting ready to throw everything in the crock pot so I am checking out your modifications now. Have a great day!
Allrecipes is a terrific site. I haven’t visited it in awhile. Thanks for providing a reminder.
Looks like you have a yummy week planned.
Have a great Halloween or Harvest Festival!

I find I use it almost weekly to help me find recipes that use up what I have. Thanks for stopping by!
I think the subsitution would depend on the purpose of the beer in the recipe–moisture and flavor could be substituted like the previous commenters have mentioned, but I don’t think you could subsitute in something like beer bread, for instance, where the yeast is the important part! :0)

That’s kind of what I was thinking. Thank you Charlene!
For light beers, substitute chicken broth, ginger ale or white grape juice. For heavier beers, use a stronger beef, chicken or mushroom broth or stock. Non-alcoholic beers may also be substituted.

So leaving out the beer won’t change the outcome? I didn’t know if the yeast/sugar content was the reason for using it. Thank you Susie!
I know people who use coke or 7-up instead of beer when they’re gdoing “Beer Can Chicken on the Grill. Maybe they would work in your recipes too. I think the beer is primarily for moisture. It has a lot of sugar too. So maybe that’s why sodas will substitute. Worth a try?
