The Homemakers Haven: What It’s Really About
You may be thinking that making your home a haven means that you bake five loaves of homemade bread before 9am in a perfectly clean and decorated kitchen while your children quietly and happily sit at the kitchen table coloring Bible stories. You have on your pretty homemade apron over your perfectly ironed clothes that match your pearl necklace and earrings just right.
I’m here to tell you NO!
That is not what making your home a haven is all about. Not even close.
You see, purposing to make your home a haven isn’t about making your home perfect. No way.
Perfection, actually, has nothing to do with it.
Neither does a list of ideals. Making your home a haven is not in the striving, not in the doing, not in the perfection. So what is it all about?
It’s The Little Things ….
Making your home a haven is all about those little things, like tossing out the to do list in favor of reading and cuddling time with your toddler or making a goal to get the laundry done (not even put away, just washed and folded!). It’s about taking the daily tasks as a wife, mother and child of God and honoring them, placing them above all the noise and distraction and making them sacred and meaningful.
Even though planning, cleaning and tackling those projects that have been procrastinated for too long can help to make your home a haven, I hope you see that they are not what it is all about.
Where To Begin?
Making your home a haven begins in the heart. It’s the heart of a mother for her home, her husband and her children. It is a desire to serve God in your family with love and joy. It’s recognizing that who you are in Him and that this season He has you in right now is a blessing, and an honor. Once your heart is set on Him, everything else will fall into place.
Do What You Do ….
So today, look around and do think of way you can make your home a haven by making those chores that you already have to do special. Things that won’t add more to your already busy day, but will make the tasks you must do memorable and sweet. Perhaps it’s as simple as playing some calming music on the radio while you go about your daily chores. Perhaps it’s playing a game with your child in the afternoon, or cutting his sandwich into shapes for lunch instead of the regular way. Maybe it’s writing a letter to a friend or making your husbands favorite dinner. Perhaps it’s spending some time in prayer instead of an hour on the computer.
Start Off At The Right Place ….
Whatever it is you choose today, let the Lord guide you and help you find ways to make your home a haven for His glory. And don’t forget to start it out with some time in His word. That is where the making of your home into a haven really begins- at His feet.
Have a blessed day and I can’t wait to see all the little, special things you do in your home today to make it a blessing and a sanctuary for your family!

Hi Stephanie! I just found your blog, and I am really enjoying it! Thank you for this post. I am a homemaker and mother of a busy toddler, and my home often seems more “mess” than “haven” to me. This post was so encouraging.
God bless!

Our attitude is the biggest benefit in making a beautiful home. It’s not about our material things it’s about the attitude we take in it all.
