The Best Thanksgiving Turkey Ever!

I have a confession to make.

I don’t eat meat. Anything that involves an animal dying I don’t touch.

No fish, chicken, burgers. None of that stuff. People usually ask me what in the world I do on Thanksgiving day! Well I load my plate with yummy veggies like carrots, potatoes, squash, corn, a healthy heap of dinner rolls and finish it off with chocolate cream pie. I do not miss out, trust me!

But my husband and chidlren are all carnivores. So I do make meat, but since I don’t actually eat it, I have no idea what it tastes like. I just go by what they tell me. If they say it’s good, I believe them!

Why am I telling you this? Well because my husband actually does the turkey cooking for us. And he promises me that this way (my mom’s way!) is the ONLY way to make a turkey so that it is moist and tender. So this tip is from him to me and here I share it with you!

Introducing the resident turkey maker (otherwise known as my hubby Scott).

First, rub your turkey all over with lots and lots of Mayonnaise, which he has done here. I am so thankful that he does, because not being a meat eater, I am also not too thrilled about touching it!

mb 001Secondly, wrap it up super tight.

And last of all place it breast side down, put about 1 cup of water in the bottom of the pan and cook on 325 at 18 minutes per pound.

And that is all you have to do. We don’t brown our turkey. We just let it cook like this and then they all eat it up.

Then I do the dishes.

That’s the trade off!

hmmm, mayo for the turkey… I would have never thought of it (since I never eat mayonnaise by itself) though I do bet it does impart a nice flavor. I have recently made a garlic cheese bread that uses mayo and it’s sooo yummy… I might just have to give the turkey thing a try.

I don’t eat meat, either. Actually my whole family is vegetarian so we make our own “bird” out of seasoned tofu and stuff it with stuffing and bake and baste it. It turns out so yummy!

Crazy! That sounds super easy. Good to know as we head toward Christmas (being that I’m Canadian and already had Thanksgiving!).

I’ve been making turkeys the same way since I was in my teens. We take the bird clean and stuff him and put him in a reynold’s cooking bag. Once the little thingy pops up let it sit for about a half an hour and that it’s. Perfectly yummy, moist turkey that is super easy.

I don’t eat red meat or pork. Chicken, Turkey and tuna I will eat (as long as I don’t think too much about it).

Last year we made our own Thanksgiving dinner in over 10 years!! For 10 years we order it out from a local restaurant. Last year we wanted to save money and we did it ourselves. It came out so good that we are doing it again this year!!

For the turkey (which my husband we get ready for the pan because I too can’t stand touching it) we put it breast side up, sprinkle poultry powder (yellow box with the picture of a turkey on it), salt, and garlic. Put a tent foil over it and put it in the oven. We will take the foil off at the end to brown.

I use olive oil and a general seasoning mix, mostly salt, pepper, and garlic, I think. I stuff the cavities with onion and apple chunks, and cook upside down in a covered enameled turkey roaster. It doesn’t come out looking “pretty”, but it sure does taste good!

Ours doesn’t look very pretty either! Definitely won’t be making the cover of a magazine,but it is tasty so that is what counts!

That sounds so good. I don’t eat a lot of meat but I love turkey on Thanksgiving. Do you worry at all about using foil. I like a covered pan. Thanks for the info. I will try it. Doylene

I would love a covered roasting pan for turkey, but I don’t have one. When I do chickens I have a clay roaster with a cover. Is there something about foil I should know? I have never thought of it before!

I use olive oil and bake it upside down as well. I will try wrapping it tightly though with the water in the pan. I also like to brown my turkey, so I remove the foil and let it bake right side up the last half hour of baking time.

I know a lot of people like the browned look but my husband says it dries it out. Do you find that it does?

When you cook it like this, no it does not get dried out.

Oh we should try it. Although the browning is just for looks, or does it make it taste better?

I think it makes the skin taste better, but not necessarily the meat. It does make it prettier though :)
